“Uttarakhand Leads the Way: First State to Pass Uniform Civil Code Bill, Setting a Precedent for Others to Follow”

In a historic move, Uttarakhand, under BJP rule, has become the pioneer state to enact the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, signaling a potential trend for other BJP-governed states to embrace. This legislation, aimed at providing a uniform set of laws for all Indian citizens regardless of religious affiliation, covers crucial personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed gratitude to the people of Uttarakhand and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their unwavering support. Emphasizing the bill’s inclusivity, Dhami highlighted its significance in promoting equality, particularly for women.

Opposition voices initially called for the bill’s referral to a select committee, but its eventual passage marks a significant milestone. Once approved by the Governor, Uttarakhand will stand as the first post-independence state to implement a comprehensive legal framework addressing marital, property, and inheritance rights irrespective of religion.

The Chief Minister assured flexibility by stating that amendments could be made in the future to accommodate specific clauses if necessary. However, certain exclusions, such as population control measures and considerations for Scheduled Tribes, were noted in the bill, reflecting a nuanced approach.

As the Lok Sabha elections loom, the timing of this legislation underscores its political significance for the BJP, aligning with their agenda. However, voices of opposition, including Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of BR Ambedkar and leader of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, cautioned against the imposition of UCC, citing constitutional protections of religious freedom under Articles 25 and 26.

While acknowledging the need for legislative reform, Ambedkar emphasized the importance of respecting individual rights and the constitutional framework. This development sets the stage for a broader national debate on the balance between uniformity and diversity in India’s legal landscape.
